UKRAINE / EARTH
Many ache for the atrocities in Ukraine to end, but don't know how to help. We can all aid the resolution, and help our planet as well!
Dependence on fossil fuels both fund Putin's war, and has hindered the potential for a resolution. The US stopped importing Russian petroleum products; but we secured replacement oil from other countries further diminishing world supplies, rather than reducing our energy consumption. The US uses far more energy than nearly every country.*1*2 US energy consumption needs to be reduced both for national security reasons, as well as pressing environmental concerns.
The good news is that nearly everyone in the United States could make a huge difference by simply reducing wasted resources! It is astonishing that 65% of energy produced in the US does not result in services, but is lost or wasted.*3 Immediately reducing 10% of wasted energy at home and work, for Ukraine's benefit, is both achievable and could do a world of good! Hopefully we can make even greater reductions of waste quickly to improve our chances of a bright future!
An immediate reduction of 10% of wasted energy can be achieved in countless ways both at work and at home! We hope you will join in this effort and encourage others to do so as well! Ideas will be included below to cover many sectors of life, and offer both simple immediate actions as well as more involved options.
Two easy ways to start making immediate reductions in wasted energy are getting rid of “phantom loads” and “shaving the peak”.
A 10% reduction could be achieved easily by simply reducing phantom loads at home and work. Some estimates have phantom loads around 25% in homes and sometimes more than 40% at work! Phantom loads are devices that draw electricity even when turned off or not in use. Unplugging devices or using a power strip and turning the strip off when not in use can get rid of this wasted energy and save money as well. “Kill a watt” devices are often available from libraries if you would like to assess your devices. There are several times a year when energy use is so high that the dirtiest coal burning plants are brought into service, causing disproportionate amounts of pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Conserving energy at these times is particularly helpful - get more information and sign up for notifications here: https://www.greenenergyconsumers.org/shavethepeak
