- Prioritize eating plants, reduce meat consumption (especially beef & pork.) https://www.ciaprochef.com/MOC/ProteinFlip.pdf/
- Eat locally produced foods. Consider Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). Utilize the local farmers market. Consider growing your own food - sprouts, herbs, lettuce and cherry tomatoes are easy city/apartment options and kid friendly projects.
- Eat foods that are in season.
- Don’t Waste Food. https://www.epa.gov/recycle/preventing-wasted-food-home
- Take inventory of food before grocery shopping
- Plan meals and shop with a list of what is needed
- Properly store food so it does not spoil, or freeze for later
- Food pantries and community refrigerators provide ways to help distribute food to those in need. https://www.littlefreepantry.org/ https://www.edibleboston.com/blog/2021/3/24/where-to-find-community-fridges-and-little-free-pantries-in-greater-boston-and-worcester-county
- When eating out: take any leftovers home to enjoy later
- Food variety is good for the earth, healthy, and more sustainable. Try some of these future foods! https://www.wwf.org.uk/sites/default/files/2019-02/Knorr_Future_50_Report_FINAL_Online.pdf
- Make responsible seafood choices.
- Cut the waste. Beet greens are delicious steamed; eat the skins of fruit, vegies, chicken; toast the pumpkin seeds.
- Compost to replenish the soil (take care to not feed the rodents.) Or take advantage of city compost programs or private compost programs. If you receive soil back from the program, make sure they have a way to ensure it is free of jumping worms & their eggs.
